The final speed of the upper roller is 22 RPM with a 2-1/8" OD. The bearings for the upper roller are 2" diameter x 2" wide. This traps the upper roller between them and keeps it in place. I cut keyways on every shaft that is driven to keep the pulleys/sprockets from slipping. I have about 40 hours of construction time in the project.

Because I wanted to buy grain in bulk, but didn't want to pay $100 or more for a pre-built grain mill, I decided to make my own. This is a DIY mill, and a cheap one at that, so does have its drawbacks (namely time to build). I got about 68% efficiency from this, whereas with my setup and commercially crushed grain I usually got 70%.

Kelly Lin and a team from UCSB have finished and tested a faster manual press, and it has been built in Dissan. The new press processes the sorghum stalks at about 25cm per second (10in /sec), which is more than three times as fast as the first model. And, at about $500, it costs nearly the same. The UCSB sorghum press team: (left to right ...

The mill is mahogany and white oak body with white oak roller support slider for gap adjustment. Mahogany plywood hopper. 2" x 8" hardened tool steel rollers powered by a 200rpm gear motor. The torque on the motor is unreal. I'd like a bigger hopper, but it mills as fast as I can pour the grain in, so it's not that big of a deal for me.

I figured out a way to make the blade guides using just simple bearings and some scrap pieces. I felt that most DIY sawmills used way too much metal and were too heavy, so I built mine with the least amount of steel that I could, and ended up with a very capable lightweight machine. However, some of my intuition was way off.

Bought this mill after a long wait. My old way of hand-cranking grains using a 15yr old single roller PhilMill got pretty old once I started making 10 and 15.5 gallon batches, including grain bill heavy big Belgian beers. For dry grinding corn, a hammermill or roller mill is used to do the grinding. Figure 7.11 is a schematic of a hammermill with corn being put through it. The hammers are attached to rods that turn on a rotor. As the rotor turns, the feed (corn in this case) is hammered against the wall.

A rolling mill. They use much, much less energy than grinding, so hand-cranked should be OK. They don't have wear surfaces like most mills, and are mechanically fairly simple. Rolled fine enough, sourdough can be made without any grinding. Rolled a little coarser, you can make hot cereal...if I understand it correctly, rolling your own fresh and coarse enough has all the benefits of steel cut.

Looking inside the mill's motor compartment, you can now see the motor, with a small fan and pulley on its shaft. That small pulley is connected by a drive belt to a large pulley which is mounted on the unit's drive roller. The other roller is the idler roller which simply rolls along with the mill jar when the drive roller is turning the jar.

They are similar to rock tumblers in that the instrument is a rotating container filled with heavy balls to grind the substance into powder. Ceramic material, crystalline compounds, and even some metals can be ground up using a ball mill.
